Test Results
The best way to evaluate the fuel savings potential of Andersen mudflaps for your fleet is to perform what we call a "quick test" that takes roughly three hours to complete.
Andersen Flaps will provide the mudflaps for free for this evaluation.
You need to choose a route along an interstate highway that allows you to travel roughly 15 miles in one direction, exit the highway, and return in the opposite direction to the starting point.
The tractor ECM should be zeroed out prior to beginning the first round trip, and again before starting the return leg. The dashboard speed and fuel economy readouts should be recorded for every full mile marker along the route in both directions.
After completing the first round trip, the conventional mudflaps on the truck should be swapped out on both the tractor and trailer for Andersen flaps. The ECM again gets zeroed out before starting the second run. In repeating the route with our flaps, you use the same mile markers to record speed and fuel economy numbers to compare with those from your first run. You should experience a 0.4 to 0.6 MPG improvement in fuel economy when running the route with Andersen flaps.
We recommend that you repeat this test two more times: once with conventional flaps, and once with Andersen flaps so there can be no doubt about the consistency of the fuel economy figures in either scenario.
The beauty of this test is the same driver, same load, same route, same weather, same speed, and same equipment. The only variable that is changing & impacting fuel economy is the type of mudflaps being used for each round trip.
If strong winds are present, you will also notice the impact of headwinds on the fuel economy with conventional flaps, when you reverse direction travelling the same road.
